2025 | Andy Flowers, K0SM | Andy has been a member of the club for many years. We think back to the early days of his membership back in the 1990’s when he was actively working on and promoting laser light communications and showed us techniques for making that work. Since then, he has always been experimenting on the cutting edge. Andy is the consummate innovator. When he recognizes a technical opportunity, he looks beyond the immediate problem and dives deep to seek a complete solution that he can build that will scale to impact as many people as positively as possible. Two examples are his excellent rainscatter.com website--a fantastic tool that has become popular all over the country and beyond, enabling hams experimenting at 10 GHz and above to extend their ability to make long-haul microwave contacts. Another is his Adalm Pluto SDR and software-based antenna range that provides a low-cost, accurate, repeatable range setup for use on any microwave band, with sub-1 dB repeatability. Andy has helped dozens of people tweak their antennas for 902 through at least 47 GHz and has shared the recipe for his setup with others so that this setup can be easily repeated elsewhere, as is so typical of his generosity. Andy actively participates in the various VHF+ contests (usually on 10 GHz and above from his driveway) and has even gotten his entire family involved, getting them all licensed and active on the air. He has significantly helped the RVHFG’s annual “Tune Up Clinic” by setting up and running the Antenna Range and by being a great mentor/adviser to those attending the clinic needing help with their gear. Andy ALWAYS has a smile on his face and is ALWAYS ready, willing, and able to help his fellow club members. Andy is an inspiring technical leader, a patient mentor, a fantastic operator with possibly the best weak-signal ears I have ever witnessed, and one of the highest-contributing members of the North American microwave community that RVHFG has ever counted among its members. Countless people have benefited from his contributions to the hobby. We cannot think of a more deserving recipient of the award and we are delighted to present the 2025 W2UTH Memorial Award to Andy Flowers, K0SM. | ![]() |
